Skiing like a Norwegian
Enjoy the winter nature near Voss - on skis!
This activity is perfect if you are looking for a short and easy guided ski excursion in easy mountain terrain. We take the train from Voss to Mjølfjell, put on the skis and learn how to enjoy the snowy mountains like a Norwegian!
Looking for a Norwegian-style skiing experience? But never been on free-heel skis before? For three hours, your guide will help you cracking the code of backcountry skiing, which is the heart of the Norwegian skiing tradition.
This trip includes a qualified guide, train tickets, locally crafted food and skiing equipment. All you need to bring is solid, warm winter clothing and a big smile.
We start the day smoothly with a 40-minute train ride through the Raundalen valley, from Voss to Mjølfjell. As we exit the train, we find ourselves in the middle of impressive mountain nature, with plenty of snow to play in. The steep, exhilarating path down to our starting point sets the standard for this experience: lots of fun and lots of half-intended snow acrobatics.
Our base for the day is Mjølfjell Mountain Lodge, close to Ørneberget train station. This is where we pick up our skis and get ready for our trip. We will follow the groomed tracks towards Mjølfjell, or Rallarvegen towards Upsete. We travel through easy, open-forested terrain, across small distances. Impressive, snowy mountains frame the valley on both sides.
After our trip, we gather in front of the fire in the cosy living room of the mountain lodge. We enjoy a hot meal and taste the locally produced coffee made by Voss Kaffebrenneri! During your time inside the lodge, your guide will share with you some stories about one of our most famous polar exploreres – Fridtjof Nansen.
Mjølfjell lies in the Raundalen valley, some 35 kilometers east of Voss. The beautiful Raundalen river winds its way through narrow gorges and forested marshlands. Snowy mountains with steep hillsides frame the valley on both sides. The railway line between Bergen and Oslo runs through this valley, allowing for practical and emission-free access.
Trips are run daily on request from 3 January to 20 April 2020.
Meet outside the café called Tre Brør near the town square of Voss at 09:15 a.m. We meet and greet and go through our equipment and clothing, before heading to the train station. The train to Mjølfjell departs at 10:00 am. The train ride lasts around 40 minutes.
We return by train to Voss, reached around 4.30 p.m.
You are free to use your own clothes, as long as they are considered adequate by your guide.
