The Nærøyford Haute Route

An unforgettable multiday fjord-hike

The Nærøyfjord is arguably the most spectacular fjord in Norway. It is actually a Unesco world heritage. Towering wall reaching 1600m rise vertically right from this narrow passage of water. This is the land of the superlatives: the Nærøyfjord is a section of the longest and deepest fjord in Europe, it has as well some of the highest waterfalls and is right by the biggest glaciers and mountain plateaux in Europe. Many tourist visit the region and enjoy a boat or kayak ride from the sea looking at those impossible walls. Most of them will believe it is actually impossible to get to that skyline, and even few of the locals that know it is possible will even dare to do it. We are not talking about a climbing or alpinism activity. Reaching the skyline is possible through hiking terrain. However it is rough, technical and exposed to the elements hiking terrain. The Nærøyfjord haute route is our proposed challenge for those tough hikers.

Trip outline.

This hike will be the “to go” options for advanced hikers, that want to do a technical adventure very out the beaten path. Hikers that just do not want a great day hike, but want to feel deep in the wild nature. Hikers that want to overnight in a tent on the high mountains and want to feel a deep connection in the terrain in between steep fjords and glaciers.

Due to the difficult terrain, we cannot find up here the traditional Norwegian hiking paths from the excursioning club of Norway and neither their cabins. This add to the adventure, but also to the exposure. We tackle this problem with a glamping solution. We will set our basecamp up in the mountains. Staff from WildVoss will set the base camp for us, so we can hike with daypacks, making more likely to face such big days in the mountains.

Day 1: 20km and 1500m uphill.

-start from Bakka at the nærøyfjord.

-hike to Rimstigen.

-hike to Breiskrednosi.

-Camp.

Day 2: 25km and 700m uphill

-hike to Skarsnosi

-Hike to Bakkanosi.

-Pick up car at Jordalen valley.

Possibility of adding a third day: Hike over Tverrbotnuten to the base of Fresvikbreen glacier. 25km, 1000m uphill.

Terrain

Technical hiking terrain. Long sections with unmarked paths, uneven terrain and scrambling sections. Long traverses of high mountain terrain with a big exposure to bad weather. Navigation can turn challenging. On bad weather, possibilities for an evacuation are limited.

Requirements

Previous hiking experience, high mountain equipment and a considerable level of fitness is required.

Overnighting

The overnighting for this trip will be at a basecamp. The basecamp will be set by one of our guides that will act as porter. In that way, we can hike with light day packs, and come at the end of the day to a set base camp, where we have our sleeping bags, cooking equipment and food to cook. The basecamp will also be packed and taken to the car by our second guide, working again as a porter. We can provide the tents, sleeping bags and camping equipment.

Season and availability

Summer hiking July-September 30th:

For hiking in such terrain we need to wait for enough snow to have melted from the mountains. Generally that will happen towards the last days of june. Snow will be expected on some sections of the way for most of the summer, however they should not be too many or difficult to handle with hiking boots and poles.

Spring:

From the middle of mars, similar circuits can be set to the main mountains of the route with cross-country skis or ski touring gear. Possibility of camping on the top of Breiskrednosi.
