Standing tall and proud, the mountain named Oksen (1241) provides a spectacular view of the whole Hardanger region. From its peak we get an exceptional birds eye perspective of four surrounding fjords, two glaciers, the impressive Hardanger bridge and the lush greenery of the Hardanger villages.

Trip outline

From the car park near the farms of Tjoflot, we follow a trail that winds its way steeply through the forest. As we approach the tree line, the view becomes increasingly beautiful. After about an hour’s walk, we reach the mountain farm called Vindhovden, a perfect spot for a lunch break.

From Vindhovden we continue along a path with some steep sections, towards the top of Oksen at 1241 meters above sea level. As we gain altitude, the horison widens, until we get to enjoy the summit panorama.

In the high season, there will be a lot of traffic on the route from Tjoflot. We recommend taking other routes to Oksen on such days. The routes from Hamre (to the North-West), Djønno ( to the East) or Selstad (to the North) provide excellent alternatives.

Reasons to go

Oksen is situated at the intersection of the four fjords called Sørfjorden, Granvinsfjorden, Eidfjorden and the main Hardangerfjord. Few other viewpoints can match the magnificent views of the fjord nature you will enjoy from the top of Oksen.

Getting to the starting point of this trip is a rewarding experience in itself. Spread out along the winding road, peaceful farms and small settlements dot the beautiful landscape.

The hike to Oksen is steep and strenous, but you don’t need to go all the way to the top to enjoy the views.
